This calculation is based on a BP executive’s report stating that before the explosion gas was being removed at a rate of 3,000 cubic feet of gas for every barrel of oil. There are 5.64 cubic feet of gas per barrel at normal temperature and pressure. The equivalent barrel/barrel rate is therefore approximately 532 barrels of gas per barrel of oil. That methane would not escape into the atmosphere, but as methane breaks down in water it removes the dissolved oxygen, and it has substantially removed the oxygen in the Gulf of Mexico.
